The Thriving & the Vigorous: Diwali

One of the most fascinating festivals; Diwali is widely celebrated throughout the world by the Hindu community. It is amongst the famous festivals in the Hindu calendar and is celebrated to pay tribute to Lord Rama. This festival of lights is all about rejuvenation and is highly celebrated with great zeal and joy. This celebration took place when Lord Rama’s exile ended and he returned home with his wife Sita and brother Laxman. During his homecoming, the people of the Ayodhya (an ancient city in India) were delighted and they decorated the whole town with lights and lamps. The word Diwali is derived from a Sanskrit word “Deepavali” that literally means “row of lights”.

According to the traditional beliefs; the followers of Hinduism and Jain are supposed to do good and be generous during the occasion - Sins are to be avoided and a habit of doing good should be adopted. People light candles, lamps and decorate their houses and all these lighting signifies the victory of good over evil. Diwali is celebrated ancestrally in India and in many other countries as well; this was the time when Lord Rama defeated the evil King of Sri Lanka who was known as Ravana.

Diwali Decorations:

On this thriving festival, people decorate their houses with beautiful flowers, vibrant lighting, aromatic candles and earthen lamps. Most people add rangolis into decorations as well; this is one of the most famous art form in India and is also a form of sand painting. A rangoli is usually painted during Diwali and it’s amazing to see how beautifully people design it – surely a hard yet creative thing to do. Diwali is brings together families and relatives; most people host a family dinner or a party where all the loved ones can get together and celebrate the festival. Firecrackers are the significant Diwali items; these are lighted with excitement causing bustling effects in the atmosphere. New clothes are bought and many charming Diwali gifts are exchanged.

The Booming Shopping:

Markets and city centers are exclusively decorated during Diwali; interestingly, Indian tourism industry gets to welcome thousands of tourists during this time of the year. This time is the best time for the traders and shopkeepers as their business expands; people do a heavy shopping for the occasion and buy many gifts. According to the beliefs it’s said that buying household goods and gold during the occasion brings good luck. Decorating and clean the house and wearing new clothes during Diwali bring wealth and prosperity. Therefore during the festival people buy products such as jewelry, utensils, decoration items, idols of gods, electronics, clothes, eatables and other such goods. People get to enjoy a lot during the festival as in many commercial zones; special Diwali Carnivals or Melas are exclusively held for the celebrators.

On this Diwali; make sure that you send the best Diwali gifts to your family and friends; these can be bangles, greeting cards, sweets, clothes or even a set of diyas or lamps would be impressive. Wish your loved one by sending nice Diwali SMS messages or e-cards. Diwali SMS are the best way of wishing and it doesn’t take much time too, however sending a greeting card via post office is a good old way to wishing “Happy Diwali”.
