Ramadan: Purifying Your Soul
Ramadan this year will begin on the 11th of August and is believed to end on the 9th of September. However, the arrival of Ramadan totally depends of the sighting of moon and this is due to the common nature Islamic Lunar Calendar has. In Islam, a Muslim holiday starts on the dusk of the earlier morning. Thus Muslims will get to celebrate the arrival of Ramadan on the sundown of 10thAugust, 2010. It is to be noted that Ramadan dates are different in all different countries as these depend on the sighting of the moon.

It is known to be the 9th month of Islamic Calendar. For almost every Muslim, this month is a very special time of the year. During this month, Muslims in all parts of the world tend to fast and read or recite the Holy Quran. Ramadan is also the month of Tarawih prayers, which are offered in the mosques by both women and men. It is also the month of Sadqah and Zakah-ul-Fitr. Charity in Islamic (or Arabic) term is known as Sadqah. This is a kind of charity, which is only to be given to the poor Muslims. Zakah-ul-Fitr is known as “alms giving”.
During this month, Muslims living in all parts of the world practice fasting in which they tend to abstain from drinking, eating and other foul practices from dawn to dusk. It is believed to be the month of forgiveness in which the spiritual guidance is bestowed upon Muslims by Allah. It is the time of the year in which a Muslim purifies his soul and seeks forgiveness by refraining from doing sins. What makes this month more special is the revelation of the Holy Quran. It was this month when the Holy Quran came down on earth to guide the entire human kind, it is a holy book which is an absolute guidance for Muslims. Ramadan is also regarded as the month of seclusion and kindness.
In the month of Ramadan, it is an obligation on all Muslims to wake up in the early morning (before dawn). Muslims tend to have their breakfast (Sehri or Sehar) and then they offer their morning (Fajr) prayers. After offering their prayers they continue to spend the rest of the day doing their chores without eating or drinking anything. It is the time of Maghrib (sunset) when the Muslims get to end their fast by having their supper. The supper in Arabic term is considered as “Iftari”. After having their iftari, evening prayers are offered and mosques are visited in order to offer Tarawih prayers.
The month of Ramadan is all about self-improvement. You get to learn about the level of hunger and thirst which is experienced by the poorer communities. This indeed makes you want to thank Allah for all the blessings and luxury He has bestowed upon you. So it is your duty to fast throughout the month of Ramadan open-heartedly. Make sure that you donate and help poor, offer your prayers 5 times a day, be kind to your parents and relatives and remember Allah at every single minute.
